National days and festivals are taken really seriously here, and on Tuesday was father's day here in Bolivia, so we took a break from the normal routine and proceeded with celebrations!
It was the turn of my class, Inicial 2,
to perform at the weekly meeting. We did a dance to a song ("I want to to
be like my dad"), the kids dressed up in their dad's huge shirts and
shoes, with moustaches (some of which I may have accidentally drawn on using
permanent marker!) and white paint as shaving foam.
Then the football tournament began! Dads
of all ages formed class teams and played hard all morning, making their
children proud!
The winners were the dads of Inicial 1, and they all received
football shirts, as did the runners-up Pre-kinder.
There was also a raffle in which 13 rain
jackets donated by a friend of Proyecto Horizonte were given out to the lucky
fathers.
The day ended with tasty treats, typical
Bolivian festive dish Pique Macho, cooked by the staff and mums enjoyed by all!
In the school, as well as more football, the kids did some songs for their dads, a poem and some dances, for which the costumes looked amazing!
Out of a class of 30, only about 5 or 6
dads showed up, the ones who did were really keen to get involved in the
football, but it was really sad to see that a lot of them don't really have
much of a father figure in their lives. Two of the kids came with older
brothers, one with an uncle and one with a grandpa.
