Rachel Quine fills us in on the work she's been doing on a new project with Mery and the social work interns here at Proyecto Horizonte.
This
week I helped Mery
and the social work interns with a new Recycling project. On Tuesday
they started a programme on recycling in Rene Barrientos school at
kilometer 9 in Mineros San Juan. Over the next two weeks they will be
talking to every class in the school about the importance of recycling,
using creative costumes and the concept of four 'Superheronias'. These
heroines, representing the four different types of bins - white
for recyclable items, green for biodegradable, brown for dangerous items
like batteries and black for 'desechos' or general rubbish - teach the
children in an interactive way about sorting their rubbish. After the
presentation, the class were then given an opportunity to practice
sorting some rubbish for themselves.
I observed some of these sessions this week and
was really impressed! The Superheronias concept of the lesson engaged
the young people really well. Proyecto Horizonte is working with the
organisation, EMSA, to provide these four type of bins for the school so
the children can put their new knowledge into practice.
